School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships

How does it work?

School based apprenticeships and traineeships provide students with the opportunity to attain a nationally recognised VET qualification as well as their Higher School Certificate (HSC). Additionally, students gain valuable work skills and experience through part-time paid employment.

A school based apprentice will:

  • Complete stage 1 of a certificate III trade qualification by the end of their HSC year
  • Complete a minimum of 100 days in the workplace (some qualifications require more days in the workplace)
  • Attend training each week with a Registered Training Organisation, such as TAFE
  • Roll over into full time work after their HSC year (3-5 year commitment)

As a school based trainee will:

  • Complete a certificate II or III qualification by the end of their HSC year
  • Complete a minimum of 100 days in the work place (some qualifications require more days in the workplace)
  • Attend training each week with a Registered Training Organisation, such as TAFE
  • Complete their traineeship at the end of Year 12

Students choose a school based apprenticeship or traineeship pathway to:

  • Get paid while they learn
  • Get their HSC as well as an AQF qualification
  • Kick start their career while they're still at school
  • Increase their chances of employment when they have finished school
  • Get a taste of what a chosen career is like to see if it's the right choice for them

Businesses employ school based apprentices and trainees to:

  • Access young, entry-level, part-time workers who can be trained and shaped to fit your workplace
  • Address their future skill needs
  • Attract more young people to their industry as they develop a relationship with the local school community
  • Receive attractive financial incentives that are offered to employers of school based apprentices and trainees
